About Use Of Rodenticide In Coquitlam

Like more than a dozen other cities in B.C., Burnaby has now made the move to eliminate rodenticides from their pest-control arsenal. These poisons cause rodents to slowly bleed out and die in a protracted, painful manner. In addition to the inhumane way they operate, these rodenticides cause harm to more than just the pest rodents. Predators such as owls and other raptors are fall prey to the rodenticide upon consuming poisoned prey. With this ban in place, Burnaby will be turning to alternative methods of pest control.

City of Coquitlam

The Vancouver Parks Board took initiative in 2018 to have the food concession operators in Vancouver City parks not use rodenticides as a control method for dealing with rodents. In December 2020 the Vancouver Parks board received an updated report from their Vancouver Bird Strategy Committee. The goal of the Vancouver Bird Strategy is to create the conditions for native and migratory birds to thrive in the city and across the region. One of the recommendations of the Vancouver Bird Strategy report states,

“Continue to explore rodent control solutions that don’t use rodenticides.”
