Why Is Rodent Control Important?

Rats and mice cause anxiety and sometimes even fear for many people—and for several important reasons. Rodents are exceptionally resourceful critters, taking advantage of any opportunity to scurry through even the smallest crack or opening of your home. Once inside, they can cause serious harm to both you and your property.

Rodents create not only structural damage but also spread dangerous diseases. Plus, they also carry harmful bacteria that can contaminate food sources, putting you and your family’s health at risk.

If you’ve noticed any rodents in your home or business, give us a call. Solutions Pest Control has a host of tried-and-true methods to get rid of your mouse and rat problem.

What Is Rodent Control?

Rodent Control is the prevention, management, and elimination of rodents (rat control and mouse control). The most common rodent control issues in Vancouver, North Shore, Whistler, Squamish, and Lower Mainland involve the House Mouse, Field Mouse, Roof Rat, Norway Rat, and Pack Rat (aka Furry Tailed Wood Rat). Each of these rodents has unique characteristics that require different methods for proper eradication, including the use of traps, poison, and exclusion. We will eliminate your rodent issue and help you to prevent another one from occurring.

Rodent Control Services Work For Mice and Rats

About Rat Control

Are Rats causing you a headache? Rats in your home are never a pleasant experience unless you are one of the few who keep them as a pet. As a pest problem, they can trigger a lot of anxiety and stress, and rightly so.

Rat control in Metro Vancouver and the Sea-to-Sky Corridor is one of our favourite pest problems to work on because of the complexity of their behaviour. Love them or hate them, rats are fascinating creatures that require both the residents and the pest control specialist involvement to solve the problem.

Top 5 Methods Of Rat Control

Every problem is unique, so what is it we look for when we first start dealing with a rat infestation? There are a lot of variables we look for when we arrive to begin rat control:

  • species,
  • geography,
  • diet,
  • habitat and
  • even weather are just a few.

The geography of a region can reflect the species you are dealing with and, in turn, the potential population over time. Even when we diagnose and approach the issue, the level of cooperation from the occupant can make a huge impact. Have the rat’s food sources been contained or removed (garbage, etc.)?

These reasons (and more) will dictate the best method to use when deciding how to get rid of rats in a home.

Just as you may imagine, this pest control method involves the use of rat traps only in and around the property. Why traps? Many reasons, primarily being the physical removal of the rats and safety without using poison. When a rat eats poison, you are not able to control where they will die, and they will smell bad wherever that is.

Solutions Pest Control does not use poison for inside rat control at any time.

When using the rat trapping method,

  • the first step is a thorough inspection of the affected area.
  • The next step is to set traps in optimum locations to ensure the safety of children and pets in the neighbourhood.
  • We schedule follow up visits no later than every 2-3 days to inspect, empty and reset traps.

Since the rats are always in the traps, there is no guessing where they have died and associated smells. Trapping will continue until the rat activity has stopped. Then the traps are removed, and minor rat exclusion work is done to protect the home from further incursions.

Baiting involves the use of poison for getting rid of rats and population reduction in/around homes and commercial buildings. As stated above, Solutions Pest Control does not use poison inside for rat removal.

However, rat baiting is a very beneficial practice for exterior rat control. When using poison for outside rat control, the bait is placed into locked, secured, labelled stations that must meet specific provincial and federal safety requirements. The stations must be inspected and maintained as long as they are in place.

You will frequently see these black boxes around grocery stores, department stores, restaurants and apartment buildings to control the local rat population. Less outside rats mean fewer rats trying to get inside homes and businesses.

Once a rat infestation is removed from a home or business, the next step is exclusion. If you can stop them from getting in again, why not do it?

When rats enter into buildings, they leave a pheromone trail with urine, feces and oils from their fur to mark the entrance for other rat family members that may come along down the road.

Once the exclusion is complete, the trail into the home or business is disrupted and no longer leads into the structure.

Frequently, areas that are prone to rat activity are going to readily provide food and habitat that allows the local rat population to thrive and survive. When there are homes or businesses in or near these areas, rat activity is going to be a common occurrence more often than not.

Prevention is the primary benefit of a regular rodent control program for your home or office.

With Solutions Pest Control providing regular-scheduled rodent prevention visits, you never have to worry about having a rat infestation again.

About Mouse Control

Have you ever gotten up in the morning, headed into the kitchen and discovered mouse droppings on the counter? Maybe you even saw the mouse itself while relaxing at night? Perhaps it’s just a chewed hole in the dog food or birdseed that is the first evidence of a mouse infestation. No matter how the mice introduce themselves to you, it’s never a welcome sight. Mouse Control can take on many forms today; a search on the internet or a stroll through the local hardware stores looking for materials in the rodent control aisle can be overwhelming.

Mouse Fact:
A mouse usually nests within 10-15’ from their chosen food source.

Mouse Control Solutions

At Solutions Pest Control, we prefer to offer an all-encompassing, long term solution for your mouse infestation that will last long after our certified mouse experts leave your home or business.

Successful Mouse Control Methods

Some of the mouse control methods include:

Identification is of particular importance when the only evidence provided is mouse droppings.

  • A healthy, well-fed adult mouse dropping can easily be (and frequently are) identified as a rat dropping.
  • Sometimes a mouse dropping can look similar to the larger American Cockroach dropping also (you would be surprised).

Proper identification of the mouse infestation is vital to deciding which is the best method to get rid of mice in your home or business.

One of our trained mouse experts can inspect your premises and quickly identify your mouse.

Both of these mouse control options, Mouse Trap or Mouse Poison, have their benefits and downfalls. Trapping requires more visits, but it does not include the use of poison. Poison requires fewer visits and produces longer-term results. Each mouse infestation is different, so we choose the extermination method that best serves the client’s needs.

Mouse Trapping is a relatively straight forward procedure that involves multiple visits in a short period of time. Traps are set up in inconspicuous areas, safe from children and pets. The traps are inspected, emptied and reset during each visit until the mouse traps are empty.

Mouse Poison involves the use of poison, deployed in pet/childproof bait boxes that are installed in similar inconspicuous safe areas where the mice are, and children and pets are not. Follow up visits are scheduled to make sure the infestations are entirely eradicated, then all poison or traps are removed. Most mouse infestations are gone in less than two weeks; however, this time frame may vary.

After completing a mouse control program, we always take our time to plug some holes or covering the obvious entry points that we have found during the service visits.

Let’s face it – if you can, keep them out permanently, doesn’t that make sense?

Unfortunately, because mice are so small and their entry points on the outside of a house are little more than the size of your pinky fingertip, this may not be a ‘permanent’ exclusion.

Once you have had a mouse infestation in your house, you are more likely to get another one compared to the person next door who has never had one. Why?

Mice communicate through droppings, urine and other ways, telling their friends and family where to hide, feed, travel, etc…, all around the inside and outside of your house. Since you can’t possibly clean up all of these, why not make your home less vulnerable than it was the first time around.

Once we have completed our mouse extermination, we’ll provide some recommendations to help in this cause. Maybe it’s removing the bird feeder or not feeding the local squirrels.

If you know why the mice choose your home in the first place, you will be better able to prevent it from happening again.
